Big Scores Highlight Opening Round
Firelands Challenge Begins New Season...
Several schools had high scores in the opening round of the 46 th edition of the Firelands Challenge
Program, but none higher than the one for Edison High School. The team from Edison scored 72 points
in its match with Oak Harbor and South Central. South Central held an early lead through the first three
categories of questions, but Edison took the lead thereafter and never looked back. Oak Harbor and
South Central gave up 16 bonus points to Edison in the match.
Perkins High School established itself as a leader by earning 62 points in its match with Western Reserve
and Lakota. Perkins was tied with Lakota through the first three categories before taking the lead for
the rest of the match. Perkins accomplished its feat without earning any bonus points from the other
two teams.
St. Paul High School has the third highest score after one round of competition. It scored 58 points to
defeat teams from Sandusky and Port Clinton. Port Clinton was ahead after the first four question
categories, but St. Paul took the lead by answering its World History question and Port Clinton did not
correctly answer its question in the same category. Like Edison, St. Paul also benefited from bonus
points. It earned 12 points from Sandusky and Port Clinton.

- St. Paul 58, Port Clinton 33, Sandusky 28
Cumulative scores after six rounds of competition determine which teams will go into the Play-off and
Championship Rounds. Round II is scheduled for October 19 and 20 at BGSU Firelands, McBride
Auditorium.
