Edison Takes Early Lead..

...Wins First Championship Match

The first match in the championship series of Firelands Challenge was held on Thursday.  The team from Edison left no doubt that it intends on extending its 12 season winning streak.

Edison led its match with Norwalk and St. Mary Central Catholic from start to finish.  It answered all of the Life Science and Mathematics questions to give itself a 16 point edge in the match.

The Edison team also capitalized on bonus opportunities.  It picked up ten points on questions that were unanswered by St. Mary CC and five points on questions posed to Norwalk.

Norwalk’s team, which finished the regular season in first place, made the most of its opportunities with the Toss-up questions.  It quickly answered the question about Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait and outwaited the other teams to answer the question about President Hoover’s campaign slogan.

St. Mary Central Catholic, the team that was in second place at the end of the regular season, had a slow start to the match.  However, it doubled the points earned in the first half with its second half efforts.

Edison’s students cheered loudly when the final scores were announced.  The match scores were Edison 45, Norwalk 26, and St. Mary CC 16.  Match scores could be affected if teams appeal answers that they gave that were ruled incorrect.

It is the cumulative scores of the three teams over all of the Championship Matches that will determine the 2024-25 champion.  If Edison wins the series, it will mark the thirteenth successive championship for the school.

The series continues next Wednesday with St. Mary CC hosting the match.  The final match is scheduled for February 12 at Norwalk.
