Edison and St. Mary CC Tie in Match

In a contest worthy of the term “championship,” Edison and St. Mary CC high schools tied in the most recent Firelands Challenge match.  Both teams scored 48 points while the team from Norwalk finished with 36 points.

Students at St. Mary CC cheered loudly as their team kept pace with Edison throughout the match.  At the halfway point of the match only four points separated all three teams.

St. Mary’s team had a seven point lead going into the final segment of the match.  However, Edison scored 12 points to St. Mary’s four points before the final Lightning Round to take a one point lead.

Another indication of the quality of the match came with four categories in which each team answered its question correctly.  The Current Events, Vocabulary, Great Books, and Team Choice categories saw each team pick up a total of 18 points.

Norwalk’s team surprised the audience by answering all eight questions in the first Lightning Round.  That helped the team keep pace with Edison and St. Mary CC.

Edison used the Toss-up categories to its advantage.  It correctly responded to questions on Aaron Copland’s “Billy the Kid: Ballet Suite” and a presidential campaign slogan from 1884.

William Muthig, Firelands Challenge Coordinator, commented:  “St. Mary had a rough start to this championship series, but today’s match clearly showed that it deserved to be in the finals.”

All three teams had appeals of their responses from the first Championship match.  It resulted in scoring changes for Edison and Norwalk.
